Many people believe it’s better to use Chinese words in URLs of your China site. In fact, even Baidu is a Chinese search engine, we still won’t recommend you to do that. More precisely, we would strongly recommend you not to.

What happens if URLs contain Chinese words

When in URLs, Chinese words are actually unreadable code to search engines. For example, the URL in the screenshot above is actually this  https://www.primetals.cn/cn/%E4%BA%A7%E5%93%81%E5%88%86%E7%B1%BB/%E9%80%A0%E5%9D%97/%E9%93%81%E7%9F%BF%E7%9F%B3%E9%80%89%E7%9F%BF to search engine. It doesn’t mean anything specific. What’s worse, the length of it is super long which surpasses the recommended limit of Baidu(78 characters)

As the result, the page indexation is low. For this website, it has a total amount of pages of more than 600. However, only about 65 of them have been indexed by Baidu. As we know, low page indexation leads to low potential of organic growth.

What can we do to improve it

To start with, let’s stop creating new pages with wrong setting of URLs. And then we need to change all the URLs in the order of from core pages to support pages. Core pages are these ones that present your business value to visitors. Support pages are usually about us, contact us, site map and so on.

There are three options of URLs for you. The first one is using English words. The second is using Chinese pinyin. Either way, they are combinations of English alphabets and readable to search engines. The last option is using pure numbers to label your pages.

When you have completed the change, you will soon observe the rise of page indexation. Of course, just changing URLs won’t improve your keyword rankings and organic traffic. You definitely need to do some on-site optimization.
